Perspectives Terminology

PERSPECTIVES

Commonly used as the short form of the name of the course called Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. Also used to refer to the Perspectives Study Program.

PERSPECTIVES on the World Christian Movement (PCWM)

A course initially developed by the Institute of International Studies in 1981.

Core Ideas

An integrated set of ideas that undergird the PERSPECTIVES on the World Christian Movement curriculum. Detailed explanations are given in order to assist course developers who want to be consistent with the standard PCWM curriculum.

Key Content

A breakdown of the essential content items lesson by lesson in the PERSPECTIVES curriculum. Developed primarily for those transculturating the standard course to help them retain essential teachings even if replacement articles are used. Also helpful for those wanting to develop specialized courses.

Standard Curriculum

Refers initially to the course entitled PERSPECTIVES on the World Christian Movement developed by the Institute of International Studies, published by William Carey Library. However, other courses which are either direct translations of PERSPECTIVES on the World Christian Movement or are transculturations intended to be the equivalent of the WCL version of PERSPECTIVES are also considered Standard Curricula. All Standard Curricula need to be developed in partnership with the Institute of International Studies in an effort to maintain the Core Ideas and Key Content while adapting to different cultural contexts. Standard Curriculum may freely use the identity of "PERSPECTIVES " in text titles, course titles, program names, and for promotional purposes but are not required to do so if the target language equivalent is undesirable.

Specialized Curriculum

Courses which are based on Standard Curriculum but are designed for specialized audiences and purposes which are distinct from those for which the Standard Curriculum in a particular context. Specialized Curricula may use some or all of the material from the Standard Curriculum, but must be distinct in terms of delivery, audience and identity. Most Specialized Curricula will be some form of shorter, simpler course. Specialized and Standard Curricula should be able to be used in collaboration without competition or confusion. Specialized Curricula do not necessarily reflect all of the Core Ideas or contain all of the Key Content items. Specialized Curriculum developers may desire recognition as a member of the PERSPECTIVES Family of resources and may apply with the Institute of International Studies to be recognized as such.

PERSPECTIVES Family

All Standard and Specialized Curricula that meet the criteria of the Institute of International Studies so as to be consistent with the PERSPECTIVES Ethos and which do not contradict the Core Ideas. The PERSPECTIVES Global Desk will be responsible for reviewing Specialized Curricula for acceptance as PERSPECTIVES Family resources with the assistance of others intimately familiar with PERSPECTIVES and the Core Ideas as necessary. Such resources may display the PERSPECTIVES Family insignia, although not on the front or back cover or the spine. The word "PERSPECTIVES " should not appear in the title of any PERSPECTIVES Family curricula unless it is an authorized condensed version of the PWCM Standard Curriculum or is clearly non-competitive (such as PERSPECTIVES on the World of Islam).

The purpose of the PERSPECTIVES Family recognition is to provide a package of benefits to those who are developing Specialized Curricula that are based on PERSPECTIVES while at the same time protecting the integrity and the identity of PERSPECTIVES itself. The desire is not to control, rather to collaborate, bless, and promote what the "PERSPECTIVES Family" (in this case the people) are being led to do with the vision they derived from PERSPECTIVES .
